We slept late today, by the time we managed to tear ourselves
from bed the sun was high in the sky. We decided to wander over to a cake shop
on the far side of the road to grab some company for our morning coffee. As I
had been writing on my tablet and reading my book, I walked with the two
clasped in my hand.
Walking near the road, I suddenly became aware of a
motorbike approaching me quickly from behind, the roar of it had me jumping to
the left, which was fortunate as at the same time, the rear passanger lunged
for the tablet pc in my hand, narrowly missing but grabbing my vest instead,
scooting away with a small fragment of my torn vest as his prize. An
unfortunate reality check on a country I had become so comfortable in, I will
be more careful in future.
We decided to walk to the nearby Sultan's palace, one of the
tourist attractions to be found in Medan. This turned out not to be the best
idea, as soon as we turned up, the indonesian tourists quickly lost interest
with the antiques and architecture on show, soon a que was forming to take
photographs with us... Sarah was favourite, I took great enjoyment in here
being pulled around to pose with the kids, families and elderly alike. We
quickly fled the palace, with tourists literally chasing us down the steps and
headed back to the safety of our homestay, where the coffee is free and the
drinks are cold.
We spent the rest of the day on the front porch of the homestay drinking cold drinks and playing cards. I have lost interest with Medan, it seems exploring the streets is more hassle than its worth. I look forward to flying to Jakarta tomorrow.
